This is an ancient fakir stunt that has become popular again of late with the invention of "positive thinking" courses in the US, which use it to convince people that if they really believe in themselves, a kind of "mind over matter" can occur which allows them to accomplish the impossible!

However, all that is really taught...is to walk fast. Which anyone can do. Because coal has a particularly low conductivity, the feet only absorb the surface heat and - provided a good pace is maintained - actually get hot surprisingly slowly.
