When I was a kid, I never missed the Ed Sullivan Show. It was a variety show and there were lots of mentalists, cold readers, and 'regular' magicians.

One of the tricks that really had me fooled was the 'levitation act'. A lady appears to float in front of the magician while he takes a large hoop and runs it back and forth around the women so that you know that there is no WAY she is connected to anything.

It wasn't until a few years ago that I saw how that trick was done. But when I was still 'open' to the idea of all kinds of supernatural phenomena, I KNEW that she was floating in mid-air. She had to be. I saw it!

We are ill-equipped to deal with intentional illusion. I guess as our brain evolved over time, the quarry was either there or it wasn't; the 'cave' never moved; the Sun always set. So it seems skepticism is something that must be learned over time.

But watching a magician is fun, even though I now know that only trickery is involved. And most magicians make no pretence of supernatural causes. But many out there pretend that something other than trickery is going on, and they seem to have an endless supply of gullible victims willing to supply fame and fortune.

Skeptics are frequently told that they aren't 'open-minded'. Ironically, it is these 'believers' that refuse to open their minds to the world of illusion.
