Sharon is on vacation this week, but I would be more than happy to share our family's experience with yours. I would say PP is a combo of hands-on experience, outside nature real life type learning, and actual book work. For our family it is a great combo. We use your basic reference materials- dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas. We also use the wonderful World Wide Web, we all here can give sites to save to favorites. We go to the library, to save time, I go to the libraries online site to search for and hold books before we head out the door. The curriculum book gives a list of general materials needed after the introduction, and at the beginning of each week it gives a list of any addition items or info you need for that week. Sharon gives a little background for you to start with each week to use in addition to any info you may gather, which I find helpful for quick reference. She also gives spelling words that can be used and activities to go with them.
Our family just loves Patchwork Primers because there is fun education to learn every day! Even I have been enjoying the education, I'm learning more now than I did in public school when I was a kid.
I hope this helps!
