You will love using Vol 1 with your 1st and 3rd grader as well as your 4 yo. I also have a 1st and 3rd grader this year and we have done the first 3 weeks of the study. We are enjoying it very much! You could use Patchwork Primer with your 5th grader also if you change your mind - just add a math program and some extra grammar (like Easy Grammar) and you're set!
