Subject: Does anyone else have a child...

...who doesn't seem to grasp parts of speech? I know part of the problem is she's dyslexic and didn't read until late, so up until this year, we've mainly just focused on learning to read. We've covered parts of speech for the past two years, though, and I'll think she's getting it and then two days later I ask what a noun is and she's completely clueless. I know that they keep covering parts of speech through high school, but it certainly seems by third grade that she could remember at least nouns and verbs. She's a very bright child otherwise. In math and science she's quite gifted, but language just completely throws her. And it throws me, because being a writer, language comes so easily and I can't seem to figure out how to explain it any simpler.

Any suggestions? Anyone with older kids, how old do they really start to get it?

Sharon
