I can't speak from experience, but I've been told by several "experts" on the Reading & Math Vegsource board that 4th grade and/or ages 10-12 is the time when kids begin to really grasp grammar.

So, I'm taking a very laid-back approach to early grammar instruction and working on things like capitalization and punctuation. A fun way to work on grammar is to play Mad Libs! My kids love the funny stories that come out of them.
