Subject: Volume 1 compared to Volume 2

Hi, everyone,

I just wanted to let you know some of the differences between the volumes in case you're trying to decide which one or if you already have one and are considering two.

The Format
1 - Begins each week with lesson plan guide, background information, then overview.
2 - Overview and plan guide are integrated together and background information is integrated into the daily lessons.

History
1 - Chronological history lessons.
2 - History related to inventions. Inventions are divided into categories of communications, transportation, food related, household helps, arts and entertainment, and medical advances. Inventions within each category are in chronological order. Week's lessons are in chronological order. The history begins with the inventions and discoveries that led to the specific invention as well as advances of the invention. Sometimes a week may cover a decade of time as some inventions evolved over a long period. Others may focus on the work of just one inventor. Others may include numerous inventors.

Geography
1- has geography
2- doesn't have geography

Spelling
1 - List not related to week's lessons. Words get progressively harder.
2 - Spelling integrated into week's lessons. Words tie into week's lessons. Spelling is done like other subjects in that you're given a category and you select the specific words you use. For instance, all the words may be adjectives if you're studying adjectives. Spelling could also be used as vocabulary.

Music and Art
1 - Mostly hands on learning.
2 - Some hands on learning. The rest of the year is music and art appreciation and history. The appreciation study includes each week focusing on a specific artist or musician from the time period covered in history. History includes the style of music and art popular during the time period covered in history.

Science
1 - Science is general studies, simple hands on activities.
2 - Science directly related to inventions. Includes more experiments and research. Volume 2 is more heavily focused on science whereas Volume 1 emphasizes history more.

Language
1 - Covers broad spread of communication, grammar, oral communication, and writing.
2 - Concentration on grammar and writing. Semester one covers words, sentences, and punctuation and capitalization. Semester two covers journal writing, essays, research reports, poetry, scriptwriting, and a comparison of different types of writing.

Recipe
1- Includes recipe of the week
2 - Doesn't include recipes

All new in Volume 2
Volume 2 introduces Inventor's Club. This is a way to learn even more about the studied topics. Inventor's Club is a proficiency badge system with activities that can be done by individuals or homeschool groups. Each six weeks has a badge that can be earned by completing 10-15 activities. Included in the book are certificates for each level that can be copied. Vests and badges can be ordered or you can make your own.
Volume 3 will continue the Club concept with a Country Club.

Well, I guess that about sums it up. It's not really that different, but I've learned from Volume 1 and tried to make Volume 2 even better. Now I'm trying to make Volume 3 the best yet.

Happy Homeschooling!
Sharon
