yes i am a kuwaiti an arab who happens to be a huge huge rock n roll fan. growing up i never really liked the music that was being played at the time like pearl jam or nirvana because i was a die hard 70's classic rock fan enjoying the purity and rawness of the likes of led zeppelin deep purple black sabbath (the ozzy years)and so on.
i read about badlands in a magazine and decided to check it out without really knowing or having any clue what to expect............my god !!!!!!!! was i blown away (it was voodoo highway at the time) it didnt sound like any of the late eighties or early nineties crap that was playing at the time, it was as though it came straight from the seventies standing right there with led zeppelin and deep purple. i was struck by the crunchy sound of jake e lee's guitar but most of all ,what really hit my soul like an arrow was ray gillen's soulful voice, it is the kind of voice that brings tears to the eye you cant help but concentrate.
the band was so tight , and i thought the choice of the band doing their own version of fire and rain was superb!
there was nothing else i would listen to at the time absolutely nothing just badlands voodoo highway! i checked out their first album and it was equally superb!
ray gillen's voice is the reason behind me wanting to check out more soul singers rather rather than the screaming and wailing of (some not all!) hard rock singers!
i must say i only recently found out that the late great ray gillen has indeed sadly passed away over ten years ago and i must say that i was saddenned and shocked!why arent there tributes to this great singer and man? why arent there reissues of his great albums out there in the market so that his music can be heard by next generations in the same way many other musicians are being honoured! ray gillen's voice was great, his band was great, their music was great!!!!!!!! jimi hendrix, jim morrisson, janis joplin, jerry garcia, phil lynott, bon scott, freddie mercury and even jeff buckley are getting reissues i think badlands albums must get reissued without any of the reamstering crap!
death comes to us all! some die from illnesses and some die of natural causes but the main thing is that after we all die, what stays behind? ray gillen has managed to leave behind a legacy of great music great rock n roll and nearly everybody remembers him as being a great guy and i do believe that because you feel it in his voice!
ray !! your fans are from all over the world (even from the middle east)and may you rest in peace!
my best wishes to all especially amy gillen and ashley gillen!
