Subject: Is this Heaven?Chocolate and Cherry Angel Food Cake

3/4 cup flour
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar(divided)
1 1/2 cups(about 12)egg whites,room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/3 cup well-drained,chopped maraschino cherries
2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate(divided)
2 teaspoons margarine or butter
1 tablespoon corn syrup
1 cup powdered sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons maraschino cherry liquid

Place oven rack at lowest position.Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In small bowl,combine flour and 3/4 cup of the granulated sugar.

In large bowl,beat egg whites,cream of tartar,salt, vanilla and almond
extract until mixture forms soft peaks.Gradually add remaining 3/4 cup
granulated sugar,beating on highest speed until stiff peaks form.Spoon
flour-sugar mixture 1/4 cup at a time over beaten egg whites; fold in gently
just until blended.Fold cherries into batter.Grate 1 ounce of the
semi-sweet chocolate and fold into batter.Pour batter into ungreased
10-inch tube pan.With knife,cut gently through batter to remove large air
bubbles.

Bake in preheated oven on lowest rack 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is
golden brown and cracks are very dry.Immediately invert cake onto funnel or
narrow-necked glass bottle;let hang until completely cool. Remove cooled
cake from pan.

In small saucepan over low heat,melt margarine and remaining 1 ounce
semi-sweet chocolate with corn syrup.Stir in powdered sugar and cherry
liquid until smooth and desired drizzling consistency. Immediately spread
over cooled cake.Makes 12 servings.
