Warriors of Heaven and Earth

At the Angelika (1:54). R: Violence. In Mandarin, with English subtitles.

"Warriors of Heaven and Earth" is a magnificent looking and occasionally very silly Chinese Western. Writer-director He Ping summons the spirit of John Ford to tell a landscape-laden story of brawn, character and swordplay set in the 7th century Gobi desert.

Two upstanding soldiers (Jiang Wen and Nakai Kichi) put aside their differences long enough to drive those camels through the desert in the name of the emperor. The entourage includes a delicate monk guarding a sacred treasure and a cute girl (Zhao Wei) who finds time to bathe during emergencies.

It looks as if many horses were downed using trip-wires, but a producer says, "None of the horses used in the production were injured or killed."
