WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH

In Mandarian, with English subtitles. Running time: 120 minutes. Rated R (violence). At the Angelika, Houston and Mercer streets.

THE Chinese western "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" has so many similarities to those old John Ford cavalry movies that you almost expect John Wayne to show up.

The Duke, of course, is nowhere to be seen as a camel caravan treks across the Gobi desert in the seventh century A.D. It's carrying a small Buddhist relic with magical powers for delivery to the emperor of China.

Along for the ride are a band of renegades, a quiet young monk and a general's daughter, played by the lovely Zhao Wei.

While Ford's wagon-train convoys were attacked by Indians, the Chinese caravan is assaulted by bandits. And they always circled the wagons in Ford's flicks; here, they circle the camels.

The action sequences are well done and the scenery ¡ª remindful of Ford's beloved Monument Valley ¡ª is gorgeous. But the epic, written and directed by He Ping, falters when it gets involved with supernatural gobbledygook.
