“It’s a little too early to be bird watching, Tal,” said Audrey, appearing next to him. There’s an upside to orbing, you know. You can follow your partner if you should hear them sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night. Ok, so it’s not much of an upside you are the partner but that is beside the point. Talis shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck absentmindedly.
“I couldn’t sleep,” he lied quickly, not making eye contact with her. He didn’t enjoy lying to Audrey and even though she knew exactly why he was sneaking out, it still didn’t make it any easier to admit it to her. Besides, there was always the hope that she’d just develop a short-term memory problem or something and just forget it. Yeah, right.
“Sure. And wandering through the forest and killing someone is the perfect remedy for it, right?” she said, with a slight sarcastic and mocking tone to her voice. Then she sighed and stepped around in front of him.
“You know that lying about it isn’t going to make your guilt go away any faster, yeah? I know what you’re doing and yes, it bothers me. A little. It bothers me even more than you’re willing to lie about it to cover it up,” she said, looking him straight into the eye. “You’re forcing it all on yourself. We can’t make it work if you’re not going to tell me things, Tal.”
“There are certain things you shouldn’t have to know, Audrey. Even with all that honesty that relationships are supposed to have, I don’t see how it’s going to make us any closer if I told you that I was killing people in the middle of the night,” Talis said, then paused, “Even if you’re going to pretend that you’re ok with it, I’m not, ok?” Audrey groans and storms off a few steps before turning back at looking at him.
“You’re so arrogant, you know that? I’m trying to make a point to you, and you’re just throwing back at me. You just…” she run a hand through her hair and looked up for a moment before answering.
“I want this work. I really, really, really do. But it’s hard. Heck, we’re not the most normal couple, I realise that. A half vampire and a half demon, some things are different for us. But the basic things? Trust, honesty, respect. That’s all there, despite our differences from humanity. Let me know if you’re still willing to work that out when you wash the blood off your face at home, will you?” she said, then orbed out.
Talis literally felt ill. Audrey was right. Despite their genetic supernatural differences, their relationship was as normal as anyone else’s. There was no explanation or allowance for him to lie to her, or to keep secrets when she told him just about everything about her. All the same, it was, well, awkward. What was he meant to say? “Aud, just ducking out. Vampire instincts. You know, blood and all? Shall I get milk on the way back?” No. Even if he rephrased it to something more, well, normal, it would still sound strange and he’d feel awkward for not being outward with it.
Any relationship-advice fairy or anyone with just a smidge of information of how to handle this was completely welcome right about now.
