"Can I Touch You?"
Chapter 13
By KandiJams
Omari put another stick of Double Mint gum in his mouth. This had to be his 6th one as he stood outside of the Museum of Modern Art. He didn't care whether or not his crisp black-on-black Armani suit got soiled as he leaned against the building near the back door. His mind was more focused on the task ahead. He knew that just behind the door was an elaborate party of sorts with a who's-who in both the art and entertainment worlds but nothing seemed to obstruct him from the fact that Simone was there. He stared up at the night sky looking for assistance when he was interrupted by Jarell coming through the back door.
Jarell: (looking at his bewildered friend) You aiight man? You're chewing that gum like it's nicotine and you need a fix.
Omari: (still looking up) It calms my nerves. Is she in there?
Jarell: Yeah. Looking beautiful at that.
Omari: (closing his eyes) She always looks beautiful.
Jarell: So what are you planning to do?
Omari: (sighing and finally looking at him) Set things right. Tell her I'm sorry. Tell her I love her. Tell her I need her. Tell her until I run out of breath.....and hope that she listens.
Jarell: (patting him on the shoulder) There's no time like the present. Do what you gotta do.
Omari looked up one last time and then entered the museum. Formally dressed people swirled around the extravagantly decorated main showcase room. Jarell joined Portia leaving Omari to slowly coast around the room as he looked for what he sort. There were plenty of beautiful women at the party and a few looked his way. Some dared to approach him but he graciously declined. He had just grabbed a glass of champagne when he caught sight of Simone. She was surrounded by a few people but was alone as she stared at a painting on the adjacent wall. Her hair was bone straight and she had on a simple black dress that stopped a little pass her knees. She seemed to shine like the diamond studs in her ears. Omari cheered himself on as he approached her.
Omari: Beautiful.
Simone: (with her back turned to him) I know. The use of colors is simple explicit.
Omari: I was talking about you.
Simone slowly turned around to see Omari. For a split second she looked like she was glad to see him but her eyes cut and her expression changed quickly.
Simone: What are you doing here? Are you following me?
Omari: If I am I can't help it. I love you.
Simone: (with a disappointed sigh) Didn't we have this conversation before?
Omari: We did but it didn't go the way it was supposed to go.
Simone: And how was it supposed to go?
Omari: Neither of us was supposed to walk away.
Simone: Well that's the way it happened. You may have not wanted to go that way but I didn't want to see you with that girl. You made your choice Omari, now please let me be.
Simone began to walk away but Omari caught her arm.
Omari: I can't Simone. I wanna make things right.
Simone: (turning back to him) Are you going to erase what I saw?
Omari: I can't do that--
Simone: (cutting him off) Then it can't be right.
Omari: Simone, wait. Just let me talk to you. Hear my case.
Simone looked into his eyes and bit her bottom lip. The man that she loved stood before her but she just couldn't bear getting hurt by him again. She couldn't give him the chance.
Simone: (tear rolling down her cheek) I'm sorry but I can't.
Simone broke free from his grasp and walked away. Omari watched her go through the crowd into the bathroom. He paused for awhile and then realized he wasn't going to let her go. He followed her path right into the women's bathroom. A couple women stood flabbergasted as he barged in. There were a few whispers and gasps as he searched for Simone. He found her at the 3rd to the last stall.
Omari: (speaking through the stall door) There's no other way out of here so you have to listen to me.
Simone: You're crazy.
Omari: It's because I'm in love with you!
A few more stares from the nosey women. Omari took a deep breath and leaned his back against the stall door. He closed his eyes and started stating his peace.
Omari: About 6 months ago I started having these dreams. In my dreams there was this beautiful girl that I used to make love to. When the dreams first started it was kinda fuzzy, I couldn't really make out much of her. As the dreams continued her features became more prominent and before long I knew exactly what she looked like, her eyes, her smile, her curves, and the hummingbird tattoo on the back of her right shoulder. I was flipping through pictures one day and almost had a heart attack when I saw her. I had to meet her. I had to see this dream girl. I tried to keep my cool the day I met her and as I began to get to know her she was more beautiful than I had ever imagined.
Simone was silent and Omari opened his eyes a bit to see that most, if not all, the women had exited the restroom. He sighed and continued.
Omari: Simone, I'm not going to lie to you, back then my first and only aim was to sleep with you. I couldn't help it because that's what I did. I used women for whatever I wanted and most of the time it was sex. I wanted to use you but something about you wouldn't let me do that. For the first time in my life I actually cared for someone other than myself. And I fell in love. I fell in love with an intelligent, artistic, understanding, warm-hearted, breath-taking woman. I love you Simone and you'll have to excuse me for my faults because this is the first time I'm going through something like this. I never intended to hurt you and I want you to know that even though you saw another woman imposing on my space, she could never even come close to what you mean to me. You're actually the girl of my dreams, the girl I believe can save me from myself, and I can't stand being without you.
There was more silence once he finished. The silence was, in essence, killing him inside. For the first time he had told someone how he really felt. He stood there impatiently waiting for a sign, a signal, a sound, something to trigger that she was actually listening but he heard nothing. He slowly walked away from the stall hoping Simone would respond...but she didn't. She didn't even come out of the stall. He left the bathroom heartbroken.
As he reentered the party his sole intention was to walk right out of the door and drive home but he was stopped.
Jarell: (looking concerned) Did you see her?
Omari: (calm) Yeah.
Jarell: And?
Omari: I told her how I felt.
Jarell: (getting anxious) And?
Omari: She didn't respond. I played myself Jarell. I emptied myself to her and she didn't even say a word.
Jarell: (taken back a bit) Damn. I thought she'd at least consider beginning to talk to you again. I'm really sorry.
Omari: It's alright. Aside from the fact that I feel like my heart has been ripped from my chest, I'll be cool. I'm Omari Grandberry, the certified ladies man, there'll always be someone in the wings.
Omari's last words were as solemn as his expression. He patted Jarell on the shoulder and walked out of the front entrance. Once outside he gave his ticket to the valet and waited from his car to be brought around. As he waited he looked up at stars. He looked up at the dark sky to which he had asked for assistance and felt like crying. He tried to fight it back but before long his eyes began to well up. He felt a soft hand ease into his as the first tear fell.
Simone: (smiling through her tears) I see it got to you too.
She wiped the tear from his cheek and replaced it with a light kiss. Omari, a little overwhelmed with the situation, stood still as Simone stared into his brown eyes.
Simone: Omari, I'm not perfect and it would be foolish of me to expect you to be. I just don't want to get hurt, especially by someone I love.
Omari: (holding her in his arms) I promise I'll never hurt you again. I don't want to be without you, not another day, not another hour, not another second.
Simone: (smiling) You won't be...especially since I want you to tell me about the dreams I've been featured in.
Omari: In due time, but now I'm going to do something I've been waiting to do for the past few weeks.
Omari put his lips on Simone's and kissed her deeply. They passionately kissed and didn't notice the valet had returned with Omari's car. As they pulled apart there was a sense of completeness around the both of them. They got into Omari's car and drove away to a better life...together.
The End
You know what to do....FEEDBACK!!!
