“Can I Touch You?”
Chapter 3
By: KandiJams
Omari sat in the passenger’s seat of Jarell’s car as the rode silently down LA’s Sunset Strip. Passing by restaurants, theaters, stores, and all kinds of flashy vendors couldn’t obstruct the deep thoughts that both of them were having. Finally Jarell decided to break the silence.
Jarell: I’m gonna have Lil’ J this weekend.
Omari: Finally.
Jarell: I know. Portia’s been trippin’ something serious ever since I took him to Disney Land without telling her.
Omari: That’s ‘cause the hoe is crazy.
Jarell: (with a smirk on his face) She ain’t crazy. Just a little out there.
Omari: I know crazy and that chick is crazy. I told you she was the first time you introduced me to her. (laughing) I swear I saw her doing the nervous twitch (he started imitating).
Jarell: (laughing) Nig, you is something else.
Omari: I told you her crazy azz was gonna stick you for your pockets too.
Jarell: (expression turning solemn) Whateva man. Lil’ J is the best thing that ever happened to me. The first time I held him I knew that even if Portia and I were never together again, I’d love him forever.
Omari: Good thing you and that crazy chick aren’t together anymore. And I know Lil’ J’s the best thing, I’m not saying that he isn’t. I’m just saying that it’s screwed up the way he got here.
Jarell: What’s in the past is in the past. Speakin’ of Lil’ J, I got some pictures from his play in the glove compartment.
Omari: (opening the compartment) Man, I’m so sorry I couldn’t make it. I got tied up at the studio.
Jarell: It’s aiight. You’ve been to every other one. He was looking for you though.
Omari: (flipping through the pictures) Aiight now…Lil’ J was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Jarell: It took us forever to get him to memorize the first 5 lines of the ‘I Had a Dream…’ speech.
Omari: (stopping at one picture) Oh shit. (he rubbed his eyes and looked at the picture again) Jarell, tell me there’s a girl in this picture with short black hair and brown eyes.
Jarell: (looking over at the picture and then strangely at his friend) Yeah dawg. That’s Lil’ J’s new art teacher.
Omari: (eyes still on the picture) That’s her man.
Jarell: Her who?
Omari: Her her, the girl from my dreams.
Jarell: You serious.
Omari: As serious as a heart attack. Are you supposed to be picking Lil’ J up from school today?
Jarell: Yeah. Why?
Omari: Let me do it. That way I can get to know her better.
Jarell: Her name is Simone Jacobs and I don’t think she’s your type.
Omari: And how would you know that?
Jarell: I…I took her out once.
Omari: (grinning) Playa playa. So you can tell me about here. What she likes, what she doesn’t like, if she’s down for it on the first night.
Jarell: I can’t man.
Omari: Come on J. You wanna help me don’t you?
Jarell: See that’s why I’m single now. Yawl always be tryna take the girls away from me.
Omari: You can have her when I’m done. (licking his lips) You know I only want one thing.
Jarell shook his head but knew he could never change his friend. He sighed and began telling him everything he knew about Simone. How she liked old black exploitation movies, neo-soul music, was a painter in her spare time, like to be outdoors, and loved kids. Omari took it all in and knew his game was about to begin.
