“So, what yall do?” Roshay asked looking over at me with a smile. “Um, nothing really,” I replied leaning in the seat. “Yeah, right. So?” She asked again.
“If you’re thinking what I know you’re thinking then, girl, you’re right. Ugh, it was…fantastic. I couldn’t be more happy. Reggie’s terrific”
“Besids all the arguments and junk, yall are one of a kind”
“Yeah, he’s so sweet. How about your date?” I asked. “Girl, we had so much fun! Jermaine came over to meet Daddy. Then, we went to Poetic Soul for a while and he took me to this place that has the best pizza I ever ate. Girl, it was the best date I’ve ever!” She bragged on, “Then tomorrow, we’re going to the Lakers game-”
“You what?”
“Yeah girl the boy is ballin’ plus he’s the sweetest person in the world. The game’s at seven and we got courtside. His mom’s Kobe’s mom’s friend and she hooked us up. As funny as this may sound, girl, I think I’m in love”
“With what his money?” I asked rudely. I know I was wrong. She turned and looked at me.
“Macy, I can’t believe you said that. You know I ain’t that type of person. You should know dat. I don’t EVEN know where you come off with that”
“Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Dang, you’re just so lucky…and happy,” I responed sighing. I mean, wasn’t I happy to? Wasn’t I? Ain’t I?
“Yeah. Well, we’re just friends right now and I don’t want to make it anymore than that until I feel like I’m ready. He’s really flattered me. We have so much fun together it’s ridiculous,” She aid stopping in front of my house. I was so happy for my girl. She got a new man and everything. Ah, damn.
“Hello, I’m here to see Devin. I sent him a-”
“Name please?” The lady interrupted.
“Marcianna L. Woods”
“You’re not scheduled today. Are you a new artist? I mean, you should have called because that’s kind of unprofessional. Devin is probably busy and unavailable to speak to children except his own and-”
“Devin is, what Mrs. Myrick?” A average heighted black man asked suited in black.
“Devin, I thought you were busy. I was telling this young lade that,” She half lied rolling her eyes at me. The man smiled at me and stuck out his hand. I shoot it politely.
“Devin. And you?”
“Marcianna”
“Ah, finally you come. Follow me,” Devin cheerfully led me down a hallway to a big office nicely furnished and decorated. He directed me a seat.
“The receptionist Mrs., I mean Ms. Myrick is a bit cranky these days. She’s 25 amd going through a divorce. You’ll get use to it when you start working. So much fun in the-”
“Hold up, I’m already hired?” I asked so shocked at how nonchalant he was.
“We’re a big business, big place, big celebs and we doin’ big things. I’ve chosen you to help clean around here, sometimes answer phones and things of that nature. Unfortunately, when I’m gone, you’ll have to be under authorization of Daneesa Myrick. I’ll be here for two weeks with some groups deciding on video shoots and stuff. Plus-”
“Mr. Devin, line one with Amerie. She says it’s crucial,” Ms. Myrick informed peaking into the office. “On the phone Daneesa? Amerie should have come in to talk to me today. I already signed her,” He said opening up a big book. “She’s on the phone. I wanted to come bring your “tap down” for the coming week,” She said sitting the portfolio on his desk as he picked up the phone. “Very well Daneesa,” He said pressing the line one button. I was siked. This seemed like I was really doing something, or something.
“Amerie, sweetie, what’s up?” I could hear cleary on the other line. It really was Amerie. I guess she was a new artist, but I’d seen some promos on her.
“That’s good. Ya mama like the basket I sent her?”
“She loved it. Eating those cookies”
Devin laughed. “Nice. So, when you get back to LA we’re gonna deal wit’ it okay? Devin’s got yo’ back,” He assured her winking at me. “I’m countin’ on you D! I’ll check you later then,” Amerie laughed. “Alright sweetie. I’ll talk to you later,” Devin said hanging up smiling at me. It was a I’m-getting-something-outta-you smile. “You like Amerie?” He asked. I shrugged. “Um, I’ve seen her site, but that’s about it”
“Yeah, she’s gon’ be a hot new artist. I’m sure you guys will like her,” He assured quickly getting serious setting aside the stuff on his desk and pulling out his assignment book.
“You live in Santa Monica don’t you?” He asked. I looked at him with a slight smile. “Yes, well, how did you-”
“I’m just really good at knowing where people are from. So, when can you start? Monday?” He asked. This was pretty quick. “How does…hmm I don’t know a good $6.10 an hour is fine? I’ll tell Daneesa. Dress comfortable. Style isn’t necessay for cleaning and pushing a vaccum and stuff, right?”
I laughed. “You’re kidding right?”
“Should I?” He asked leaning into his chair. His confidence was quite intimidating. “No sir,” I responded looking right at him. I was nervous, but I wasn’t going to let him try to back me down.
“Great. Monday is…wait, you have to go to school right?” He said hitting his desk.
“Yes I do, but I have time after…six?” I asked nervously. “Six! Our offcies close at six sweetie. You have to work at least four hours as a minor. How about this, you get out at like 2:00 or something and you roll over here at 3:00pm until 6:00pm and work Saturdays from seven in the morning until noon. That’s reasonable I think. Agree?”
“Yeah sure”
“Nice. So here you go. Fill this out, read it with your parents and hopefully it works out. I’ll see you Monday afternoon or I’ll get a call of your decline. Got it?”
I took the paper glancing at it,” Yeah I got it. Thanks again I really appreciate it Mr…”
“Just Devin sweetie. Glad to have you aboard. You might see some artists roll through here. I’m here everyday so I’ll see you around. Be comfortable,” He comfoted smiling that Hollywood smile. I shook his hand and proceeded to the door. “Macy?” He called just as I opened the door to leave. I turned around. “Yes?”
“Girl, anybody ever tell you, you look like Murder’s Ashanti?” I rolled my eyes laughing. “She’s my cousin acutally” and I walked on out.
