When I bought my truck in January of this year the rate at my credit union was 4.5% over 66 months. GM was offering 3.9% for 36 months, 4.9% for 48 months, or 5.9% for 60 months, or 2002 cash back. I took the money and use it for the truck payments until it was gone. Now 0.0% for 60 months, or $2,500 up to $4,000 cash back, depends on your dealer, deal ends in early Sept. on 2002 models. Other car makers are doing the same. There is no-way banks can due that. They make their money by the interest you pay. My brother-in-law bought a Ranger in July of 2000, the best rate on the market was 8.5% for 60 months. My father-in-law bought a Chevy mini-van in March of 2001 the best rate was with GM at 0.9% over 60 months. Now, Mitsubishi is offering no payment and no interest for 1 year. Hate to see what happens after that year is up. In my area the a few used car dealers are offering 0.0% financing, and a great warranty to go with it, WOW. They have been selling like crazy. New car sells have slow down. It use to be you went to bank for everything not any more, not even for a used car or what ever.
