Subject: Educating a music novice's ears

As I am a non-musician and yet have a love for, among various genres of music, instrumental music, espeically intense intrumental music like Shawn's, I wondered if anyone could give me some tips on learining about music, its elements - composition, techniques, and so forth. It's interesting to me, though, how a non-musician like me can still get the point in this type of music: a language universal. Still, I really want to understand, technically and musically, what makes a peice awesome, or not. Thx.
