Thanks for your responses. I find Vai somewhat immature sometimes, having always prefered more substanive musical expression and tones over tricks and mere weird sounds. At the same time, though, I like a lot of his more serious work, especially Passion and Warfare. I like Satriani, but not so much that I think that he some sort of preeminent god of muisc, as the Guitar mags paint him (or them, for that matter). The little I know of Petrruci has failed to move me to dive into his music further, at least for now. Now, I'll tell you someone who I think is amazing on a par beyond them is Greg Howe, who seems to be among a musical elite who have transcended instumental guitardom with more diverse, fuisony albums, although I also loved his thundrously rocking debut album.
