My main concern about those two is that the whole G3 thing is about "instrumental rock" as if it were an entirely separate thing from fusion, especially now John Petrucci is onboard. I dug them years ago, when learning, but now I have discovered more jazzy players, their stuff seems somewhat primative to me - they both seem to have ignored the jazz potential to develop their music and have painted themselves into a creative dead-end (albeit a commercial one). It does irk me when people say Satriani and Vai are so great, I feel like saying "Go buy some Holdsworth, now THAT is great - way beyond what Satch & Vai are doing". For me, a player who does the instrumental rock thing better than the pair of them is Andy Timmons, but he hasn't ignored jazz in his brand of instrumental rock, and it makes a BIG difference. As for a lot of Vai, I don't hear any blues, either, which is pretty poor - mind you I still quite like Eat Em & Smile.
