Subject: Fuel Gauge is going mis-reading

My daughter and I both have an FFV Taurus ('96 & '97). The fuel gauges on both cars never seem to read correctly. Sometimes after start-up they read full, other days they read empty or hover around in between when driving. Can this problem be the sending unit gone bad because of alcohol in the fuel? If so, are they easy to replace?
