Subject: 98 Contour 2.5l v6 surging, stalling and check engine light

Hi guys, Im new to this board, seems like I found a great place though. :-) A 1998 Ford Contour with the 24 valve 2.5l v6 motor. Check engine light is on and its running funny, idling up and down, stalling and idling rough also. Put in new plugs and wires for the hell of it since it was easy to do and had it scanned by one of my buddies. Im not sure what code came up but he told me it says something about being lean. Seems the EGR Valve and IAC motor are operating normally according to him. He reccomended putting on a new air flow meter, which I did and it made no difference. I could swear though I hear vaccuum leaking. I think the intake gasket it blown out, the gasket betwen the upper and lower. Is this common on these motors? Im not sure this is a good idea or not, but i sprayed some carb cleaner down around there and the idle picked up, meaning it must be sucking it in somewhere, no? Would this cause a lean condition code if that gasket was bad? Please help and advise me in some way, thanks! Mike
