Its hard to say..... how many miles on the engine? was it serviced regulary? is the sound a knock or a rattle type Noise? how long does the noise last? Has the engine ever been overheated?
I have seen everything from chain tensioners to piston pin slap that makes noise when cold. without hearing the noise first hand it will be hard to give a good diagnosis.
