Finally got around to replacing the mast this afternoon - took nearly 3 hours!

Firstly, the old mast was very difficult to remove from the house, but eventually it came loose.

Secondly, the new mast didn't go in all the way - there was a 7-8cm long metal tube that was slightly too big to fit into the housing. I cut the metal tube off, leaving the rubber behind, which fitted perfectly.

Thirdly, the antenna was intermittently going up and down, but I could hear the motor whirring away. Took the motor apart discovered the 'cog' next the the motor had some sideways movement and wasn't always engaging. Couldn't work out why the spindle wasn't there, so used a nail with a similar length and diameter as a replacement.

Currently it's working fine, and if anything I'm getting better reception than I was previously!

Thanks to those who replied or e-mailed me with helpful suggestions.

Ian.
