Didn't mean any disrespect - I thought you didn't know what a head was! Had me scared there for awhile!

If you're going to keep the car, I'd replace the timing belt while you're there. I'm partial to using only Honda parts. Be careful to note the location of the camshaft gear markings and then don't move the crank. That way the static timing will stay correct.

As far as a "bad" head, I would look for combustion deck warpage, burnt or leaking valves, uneven valve depths (recession), erosion or damage to the sealing surfaces, broken valve springs, oil slobber (leakage past the valve stem seals), etc. Basically just look it over and see if something looks suspect. Be careful cleaning off the carbon - you don't want to gouge the surface. Better to leave it a little dirty than to damage the combustion deck.
