I have a 1986 Accord LX (carbureted), manual, with 315,000 kms. The car has been in our family since the dealership and has always performed very well.

There has been a recurring problem however when driving the car on highways at high elevation. When it is driven above approximately 3000’, there is almost always a sudden drop in power. This loss of power generally lasts for 10 minutes at which point power is immediately recovered and the car operates perfectly. It is so severe that I must often shift down to 2nd to climb large hills, which needless to say is dangerous on the highway. Furthermore, even when driving down a gentle slope, hitting the gas makes the car jerk momentarily and then continue to gradually lose speed.

I have taken this car to several garages and they have failed to pinpoint the problem. As it is related to altitude, I can’t help but figure it is due to the carb (I have tried cleaning it using some basic sprays and such with no effect). I’ve ran the car with both full and nearly empty tanks and the result is also the same. Any further recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike
