Sometimes, the light will come on due to corrosion of the connectors leading to the airbag. It might also be caused by a bad fuse, or a disconnected wire. I'd see if you can get the codes read for free at places like Autozone.

On bag inspection, that seemed to be a concern in the early days of air bags, but I'm not sure that it ever panned out as a problem. The electrical side is checked out every time the car is started, so the only concern has been the creasing of the bags or the deterioration of the igniter devices....glen
