A vacuum leak indeed!!! I found the air intake diaphragm (the one that's on the snorkel of the air filter case) leaking like you wouldn't believe it. I will give some details for people with similar problems to see what that is and where, etc. This air intake diaphragm looks like a metal mushroom, is located on top of the air filter housing snorkel, and is supposed to be sucked by vacuum when the engine is cold, lift up a door inside the snorkel, this way blocking cold air to get in and letting hot air from around the exhaust manifold to get in. Well, during the engine warm-up regime, this is supposed to be totally sucked/open, therefore there is high vacuum applied to it, through a temperature control valve (which is totally open when engine cold and slightly open when engine hot). So, if the pitiful diaphragm breaks, it will cause a gross vacuum leak during warm-up, especially if you live in a cold climate area (winter + Canada). So I plugged the vacuum hose to it, while expecting for the new part to be delivered to me by the dealership (CAD$28).
So, now the engine runs like a charm during warm-up and mostly after. Sometimes though, when it's hot, it stumbles at high rpm, and knocks at high load (stumbles when I'm in second or third gear and I push it to 2500-3000 rpm before shifting, and knocks and stumbles a bit when say I'm in the 4 gear/60Km/h and going uphill). But this is only intermittent, say about a couple of times per hour of driving hot, and it lasts for less than 30 seconds (so far). So the issue is just developing, I guess. I suspect EGR but when the engine is hot and at high rpm, maybe there is to high vacuum on it (I got my hands on a vacuum gage and I will do the tests from the shop manual). What about the clogged ports? I saw that in the archives and there was a link there, but it doesn’t work anymore. Can Glen or anybody help with that link?
I will also check the PCV, the distributor, and maybe the fuel pump. I will keep you posted.
I also suspect my carburetor, and let me detail on something I noticed about my carburetor, hopefully anybody can comment on a an easy fix or the need of rebuilding it. I was checking some things with the engine running hot, the air filter housing removed. At some point I stopped the engine and I heard some frying sound from the carburetor, so I take a look and see gas dripping in the secondary intake shaft/well of the carburetor from the jet (in the center of the shaft/well, on that metal diameter). I look at the level in the fuel bowl and the floater was completely sunken, the level was so high I couldn’t even see it. I restarted the engine (with some difficulty), and after a few minutes the level was normal again and it stayed normal as many times as I re-checked it. I did the cleaning thing with the carb cleaner injected in the fuel inlet hose, like Glen said. That was in the evening. The next morning, before starting the car, I think I saw the bowl flooded again (I’m not positive, as the light wasn’t very good). However, the engine started very easily, and it ran nicely all the way to work (about 15Km). I checked the level again in the afternoon, when I got back from work and it was normal. That makes me suspect the floater valve dying on me. Any other ideas? Can I get away without a total carb rebuild, by cleaning it again and again? Also, could this flooding explain the symptoms described above with the stumbling and knocking, every now and then? If there is too much fuel intake, would this cause the stumbling and knocking at high rpm/load?
Thanks for support, very much appreciated.
