John,

Well, sorry to hear that. I'd check really hard for a vacuum leak since that can cause a rough idle. A vacuum leak will mean you're getting too much air past the throttle plate at idle, and the fueling is then too little for that amount of air. You can check for vacuum leaks around the carb base by spraying around it with carb cleaner at idle. The idle will smooth out when the leak is plugged if that is the problem.

However, knocking means that the combustion event is not occuring at the proper time, or that you are getting two flame fronts and when they meet, it knocks. Usually this occurs when hot, not during warm up. Are you sure that the ignition timing is correct and that their is no condensation under the distributor cap?

I'd also worry that the EGR valve may be open when the engine is cold. The valve should be completely shut until the engine is fully warm. The addition of exhaust gas delays or stretches out the combustion event, and if you had the wrong amount at the wrong time, knocking might occur (not sure if it would or not). Did you try pulling the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and can you look to see if the valve is closed?

Look forward to hearing what you find....glen
