I have taken 3 days to read every single message relating to 86-89 honda accord messages in the archives, and I haven't found any with my problem. :(

It does have all the wierd high/low idle quirks, rough start on random days, wierd stuff relating to idle that everybody is complaining about on here, but that is not my main problem, and I don't know if this is just a progression of those quirks or what...

Here goes: (I am as detailed as possible so maybe SOMEBODY can tell me whats wrong.)

I have an 88 Honda Accord LX with 190,465 miles. VERY well taken care of before I got it.
The problem is than after I have been driving a while (sometimes as little as 10 miles, more often about 40 miles) I will be cruising along (55-70) and the car lurches as if I have completely taken my foot off the gas, when I have actually not done anything (even when the cruise control is on) then it will catch back on for a second, then lose it, catch on a sec, lose it...... and so on until it slowes to a stop then dies. All the while the transmission is violently trying to shift to accomidate this surge then loss of gas, UNLESS I take my foot off the pedal, then it will slow to a stop, and shut itself off. If I keep trying to fight it, it will eventually be longer times with out gas, catch on less, and come to a stop against my will, and again, shut off.
To cut off the time stopping takes, in order to stay in motion, I put it in neutral, turn the car off, wait a sec, then turn it back on and rev it a little, then put it back in drive. It always restarts and runs fine for a bit, then will start doing it again and again, each time starting a bit harder and messing up again closer and closer together starting at about 10 miles until the next episode, until finally about every quarter mile it will start doing it. I have never ran it dead, but I think it would get there.

This happened for the first time approx. six months after I bought it (yr. 2001, 173,000 miles) then did it approximatly 3-4 months later, then maybe 2 months later, and this year it has done it approximatly every six weeks, sometimes longer inbetween, sometimes shorter. Reciently it started doing it once a month, then every couple weeks. Each time for only one whole day.

It seemed to take over night for it to get better and go into its remission period. If I tried to drive it a few hours after it did it, it would only be a few miles before it would act up again... it had to stay put over night, then it would stop doing it for how ever long it decided to wait in remission.

I reciently began making round trips about 45 miles each way, very frequently, and I think this made the problem worse. About 2 weeks ago I was making a long trip (about 60 miles) and it started doing it around 40 miles, and I knew I was screwed. There was no way I could stop driving, so I kept putting it in neutral every time it started to do it, shutting it off and re-starting it. The episodes got so close together I could not even drive inbetween stop lights in town, but thankfully I got to my destiation. ANYWAY I think running it (restarting it so many times) that long after it started acting up (I never had before) really messed it up... Now I can't drive very far at all. It does it every time I drive it more than 20 miles now, and never waits days inbetween times. I can't go anywhere.

I have asked several mechanics, they have no idea, unless they can "tear it apart and look at it" for $200+. The Honda dealer guy just looked dully at me and said "new carb. $600" without me even telling half my story. I don't have money to waste on them just "tearing my car apart" to just diagnose it!! I'm in college and can NOT afford that!!

Why did it wait months inbetween times of doing it?? Why only when I'd drive usually 30+ miles??? Why does it have to wait over night (8+ hours) until it would go into remission again?? This is so wierd!

Here's what I have done:
-sprayed the heack out of the carb with carb cleaner on 3 seperate occasions

-uaed about 3 bottles store bought fuel system cleaner (over time, not at once), and 1 bottle of something from a mecahnic, some "super heavy duty fuel system cleaner" or whatever

-replaced both fuel filters

-replaced pvc valve ( I dunno if it has aything to do with it, just thought I'd mention.)

-Had transmission flushed and filled when I bought it (some cap thing was broken by the place that changed it and was majorly leaking trans fluid, had to threaten to take them to court to make them replace it, not sure if they did other damage, and maybe this prob is resulting..?..?)

Is ther any sensors I could change to help?? O2 sensor?? uh.. I think I read some about others on here.. anything sorta cheap? If I absolutly have to rebuild the carb, so be it... but I don't want to do that, and find that it has nothing to do with that, and I'm out $600, and still can't drive my car!!

Sorry this is so long, but that is how upset I am!! It's going to be 2 years until I graduate from college and can afford another car, I need this one!!!

Thanks so much for reading and any responses are greatly appriciated!!! (please be detailed.. I don't know much lingo, but my dad and brother are big car guys, so I can print your responses out and give it to them if necessairy!!) THANKS :)

~Samantha
