Just bought an 1986 Accord LXI with a 5spd. I've owned it for 2 days and I also have a problem with the combination switch. The actual lever (handle) of the switch is broken and it's very difficult to drive at night without getting the smell of burning wires and having the head, tail and/or instrument panel lights go out. Sometimes individually and sometimes as a group. Heck, last night, I even saw smoke comming out of the darn switch/steering colum area.
The bulbs in the tailight cluster were replaced but the "Brake Lamp" warning light still pops on.
I try to re-attach the lever to itself, by glueing and taping it, in what seems to be its original position. It's slightly better but it remains an umpredictable and unreliable device.
Does anyone know if just pulling the steering wheel and replacing the switch will do the trick or may I have a more complex "wiring harness with a hidden short" problem.
Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!
