Hello all,
I recently flipped my SUV (total loss), & found a '88 Accord LX sedan for $250บบ which is just what I was looking for to drive to & from work & school for a while.
The car has about 180,000 miles & still runs pretty good, everything on it works, paint is charcoal grey and severely faded (typical 80's grey paint), but a good friend of mine owns a body shop & will do a $1500 paint job in exchange for a website... Not too bad eh?
Now for the bad stuff: Since I got it, it's been idling kinda rough (missing/sputtering - not severe but still noticeable). It also isn't doing all that stellar in the gasoline economy department, and when, say for example I'm driving on the highway & get a red light, the engine rattles violently as I come to a complete stop, evidently caused by the tranny not downshifting from 4 to 1 (or is it 2?) ...anyway, the way i've been avoiding this is by manually downshifting whenever I stop.
Another thing it does when I stop is that it feels like the engine is about to stall (stalled only twice). To avoid this what I do is kinda leave the accelerator pushed lightly while breaking with my left foot (dangerous, annoying).
Took it to a mechanic, & he said something about the transmission filter being clogged, BUT since I had read the post on here with the guy saying those cars don't have a tranny filter, it most likely avoided me getting ripped off. (therefore I didn't take it to him, but still, the car ain't running 'ship shape' like I wish it would...
Also I'd like to mention that I've noticed the trans. WILL in fact downshift in times when the engine is revving normally as I come to a complete stop - Could the tranny issue be related to the carb idling issue??
Any pointers & help would be greatly appareciated, since there aren't many good mechanics around, & what I'd like to be able to do is to get there, give them the right parts to replace, & TELL them what needs to be done instead of getting brainwashed by letting them do the guesswork...
Thanks for your time guys,
-Serg.
