On the smell, try opening the hood and see if the smell is more noticeable there, or if it is more noticeable in the tailpipe/muffler area. If it is a leak in the engie compartment, you ought to find the source and fix it, since it in theory could start a fire. If it is from the tailpipe, and you get blue smoke when it first starts up, then your dad is right, and you probably need new valve stem seals.

On the tapping noise, I'd suspect a CV joint, although they usually click on acceleration. Crawl under the car and inspect the 4 CV joint boots on the driveshafts. They should not be split or leaking. A sure sign of a split boot is a circle of grease on the area around the boot where it has slung the grease out. Also, grab the driveshaft with your hand and twist it very hard. It should not click and should hardly move at all. Otherwise, it might be some brake hardware that is loose, but I'd suspect the driveshaft CV joints (probably the inner one on the right side).

On the static noise, it may be the heater blower that is making the noise. Does it go away when you turn the fan to off? Might be a fan blade tip contacting something that fell down into the vents, or it may be the motor bearings (not an uncommon failure).

Just some ideas, hope this helps....glen
