Hi Cam;

I'm not familiar with the 5-speeds, only automatics. However, my Service Manual does show that a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is used on manual transmissions, too. So the following info is true for A/T's, but if you do have a VSS, it will apply for you, too...

Check it out. It should be located on the passenger side, mounted in the tranny near the engine, on the firewall side. Keep looking...it's WAY down there...

It consists of two parts:
The mechanical part mounts into the tranny with one bolt. (You won't have to remove this). It has 2 power steering hoses connected to it.
The electronic part mounts on top with 2 bolts (10mm socket head), one of which also holds the connector bracket. You'll see the wiring connector right on top.

It's the electronic part that always fails. The dealer wants around $160 for one, and I couldn't find a parts store locally that had an aftermarket sensor. However, I did find one on eBay. Brand new for $57. It worked great.

You can get the same one at:
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/dpstore/hoac19spse.html
for $59, plus shipping.

It comes with a coupling pin, too. When you remove the sensor from the mechanical portion, a keyed pin (about 3/4" long) will remain. Pull it out and replace with the new one. Be careful when putting the new sensor on. It has to align with the square slot of the pin. Be gentle. Set it in place carefully, and turn until you feel it drop into place. And also be careful not to drop anything. It will fall "where no man has gone before".

Let me know if you need any further info. Hope this helps. Please let us know how it comes out.

Good luck.

Mike
