Ana,

Are you comfortable that this shop knows what they're talking about? Most all Hondas do not have "upper" ball joints. The lower ball joint connects the lower control arm (attached to car) to the knuckle (the part that can rotate to steer the car and is attached to the wheel). The strut attaches to the knuckle, and the top of the strut has a bearing or pivot that allows the wheel to turn to steer the car.

This is not a job for the DYI unless they have a press to push out the lower ball joints. Some years have ball joints that are not replaceable, so you have to replace the whole lower control arm. You also will need a spring compressor, and will likely hit a lot of rusted/stuck bolts.

If the spring and strut are bad, and the lower ball joint is bad, it sounds like the car hit something pretty serious, and I'd think there might be other structural damage. Any reputable shop will give you a free estimate, so I'd take it to a recommended shop and tell them the same thing - is this worth fixing?

good luck, glen
