Dawn in WA---
I know how you feel. My daughter is 9 and we are still dealing with this problem. She has had problems going since birth though (I even had to put Karo syrup in her formula when she was a baby to get her to go). Her belly gets so big she looks like a pregnant child and it hurts for her to bend over. She eventually gets sick from it, she will get headaches, get dizzy, have trembling legs and even vomit sometimes.

We have done some further research and are taking her to our doctor tomorrow to discuss the possibility that she has Hirshprungs Disease and not encompresis. She has been on Miralax, mineral oil & senokot, extra fiber, aloe vera juice, milk of magnesia.... you name it-if it is a laxative that a child can take she has taken it. All solutions provided a temporary solution as she was on such high dosages of everything that they basically gave her diarhea. I started discussing this with my doctor even before potty training began.

If your child's problems did not start until after potty training then I would believe that it may be emotional or psychological. The key to getting the problem solved would be to find out what the underlying problem is, until you find that out, I don't think you can solve the stool holding. IE: Is there a fear that the child has--afraid of falling in the toilet, afraid of being in the bathroom alone for more than the amount of time it takes to go tinkle? etc. Are they scared it will hurt to go becasue it hurt last time? Is the child still trying to control something in their life? This is what our doctor told us---this was one thing she still had control over and she didn't want to give up that control. Now she just wants to be like the rest of the kids in 3rd grade, so I know that is not the cause.

Good luck to you in solving your childs problem with this condition.
