Christy - I went thru this a number of years ago with my daughter who had become chronically constipated due to drugs that were used for her allergies and hives. Her colon became 3X it's normal size and the sphincter (sp?) muscle was no longer working properly. My advice - get her to a specialist in gastroenterology (we saw one at UT in Houston - can't remember his name, but if you email me privately, I will try to look it up). He used a number of methods, the first one did not work for us. Since this problem took awhile to develop, it will take a while to solve, so you will have to be patient - and yes, I know this is painful for you and your family. Take faith, your son will be completely potty trained, but it will take time. The condition, by the way, is called Encopresis. It is both a medical and a psycholoical condition - he becomes afraid to have a BM because of the pain involved and holds it. I believe the doctor told us that it is more common in boys than girls. Our daughter began treatment when she was almost 4 - we had a hard time finding a doctor who knew what and why we were experiencing and were sent to two different psychologists before finding this doctor at UT medical center. She is now almost 13 and has absolutely no problems related to this condition. The doctor told me at the time (I did not think it was funny back then!) that she would be completely cured by puberty. This is such a painful situation - you, as a parent, feel as if you have failed in some way and the child feels as if he/she has failed, too. Please let me know how this resolves itself and if you are able to get some help for him. You and your son will be in our prayers.
