First, Saxon has been great for us for several kids. I would not put it even close to any of the others.

As for manipulatives. Out of 5 kids we only had one that seemed to need them at all, and with her, we just used items around the house. Coins, beans, (candy (that kept her attention!)

We did find that they needed a little more time with memorizing their math facts. There are a number of free resources to help with that at http://www.timestables.net
Their program "Math Facts Now" was also a great help.
