My older daughter used Saxon for the younger grades, and we liked it very much. I didn't buy their manipulatives, but got what I needed as I needed it. The balance (little plastic scale) was only used once. Much of the other stuff I found at Wal-mart and a local teacher supply store. If you know what you need, you can look for it used, or make your own (geo-boards are easy to make). I liked Saxon because I had little confidence in my ability to teach math, and Saxon is scripted, so it's very well laid out. I gained more confidence in this area with my second daughter, and am using Miquon with her. It is very hands-on/manipulative oriented, but helps them to think outside the box more, and encourages them to find their own ways to sovle the problems. I like both very much, and definately recommend Saxon 5/4 and up! Best wishes in your home schooling journey!
