Like the one of the other moms posted..."Why did you decide to homeschool in the first place"... maybe revisit that time in your life and see if any of those reasons have changed?

Let me tell you, the first year can be the hardest!! I pulled my 2nd grader out of school in the middle of his year (Christmas break). That second half of the school year was just me muddling through, trying to do the best that I could. I tried building my own curriculum but that just wasn't me at the time. So towards the end of that summer I ordered a curriculum that was prepackaged and that was the KEY that unlocked both of us from whatever shackles we had ourselves in. We repeated 2nd grade and it took us a full 12 months to do it! That was a LONG year!! But we both learned a lot from each other...warts and all! Now I am in ending my 3rd year homeschooling and I LOVE it!! But if you were to ask me if I LOVE it last year (my 2nd year) then I may not have had a glowing smile on my face. It was a love/hate thing last year.
But this year I can see that this is for us!! It took us 3 years to find our niche/rhythm but we got here!

Public schools are alright. We chose to homeschool not because the schools were bad but quite the opposite! The school district we lived in, here in Maryland, was rated #3 in the COUNTRY!!! But do you know how they got to that point? They took away recess for 3rd graders so they could take the test and make the teachers look good by acing the test. Did they KNOW what they were learning? No but they were taught the test. Kindergartners are put back if they can't read at a 1st grade level. In 2nd grade, they use 3rd grade books and in 3rd grade they use 4th and 5th grade books. 30% of all students in the 5th grade are on depression &/or ulcer medication. THIS is what 'excellence in education' can do to your kid when you send them to the "best school". So for us, this public school was not for our kids. We want them to be kids, to LEARN and love learning! Not be rushed through a 10 minute lunch so they can get drilled on how to pass the test so the principal can get his free Bahama cruise as a reward for the kids testing out as #1 in the state.
Find out the FACTS regarding your school. Not what the teachers and principal tell you, but go to others that have worked in the school system, retired teachers, check out the lifestyle of your principal (where he/she lives, car they drive, what they do in their off time, charities they are involved in that are not school related). If they are dedicated to the community, are not politically involved with their own agenda but humble themselves in the community and other areas, you might have a gold mine there.
