Be careful with what you reward them!! Candy, ice cream, and most foods with preservatives and dyes can be constipating!! I'm a former pediatric nurse from Johns-Hopkins and advise that giving an enema too close to each other can cause serous problems for male children down the road and may even cause early polyps in the colon which can lead to cancer.

If there is a bowel problem, then diet is usually the primary culprit, in combination with stress. Keep processed foods to a minimum, increase the 'P' fruits to about 3 servings a day at LEAST (peaches, prunes, pumpkin, pears). Raisins help but make sure they are not coated with a preservative which can be constipating.

It's a vicious circle.... the child is stressed because they are not having movements and then the bowels constrict (a natural occurence with all people in stressful situations) and the more the child frets or is reminded of no bowel movement, the more the bowel constricts.

Also if a child presses too hard to make a movement it can permanently alter the muscles in the anal opening, especially those of male children. Hence, that child may ALWAYS have a problem with bowel movements and his diet will need to continually contain fruits and vegetables that will allow free movements. Keeping junk foods and potato based and rice based foods to a minimum (like once a week) is best advised.
Also, increase water, unflavored water, as a part of the daily diet. Having a glass at each meal along with their other beverage (milk or juice) is a good rule of thumb. And carbonated beverages should be keepen away from all children until the age of 12. Carbonation can cause ulcers and eats away protective enamel that is on baby teeth and the protective coating that is on the gum tissue in pre-adolescent mouths.
