As a teacher, I've had my students write about books we were reading in class. A favorite of mine is The Green Mile by Stephen King. I love this book because it teaches children not to judge things at face value and to investigate things before finalizing an opinion (as you recall the story opens with the capture of a man for raping and killing two little girls). I've worked with severely emotionally disturbed children, many of whom were sexually abused, and the book has been a great springboard for getting feelings out in the open and showing them that what one first sees may not be what actually is. It's also led to great discussions on healing and gifts of the spirit. Sarah Ewell Foster is another author that's great for teaching great lessons. Usually I read the book first, formulate questions (ex. How do you feel about the man who raped and killed the little girls when the story opens? What type of punishment do you think he should receive? Could he be innocent?, How do you think he healed the woman? What do you think the bugs were? Why did he get sick and weak each time he healed someone?etc). You can see the growth of the children as they go through emotionally charged books such as these, and it makes them think in ways they probably would never think if they weren't posed with the questions. I did the assignments soon also, answering the questions as I read the book, so that my answers weren't colored by knowing what would happen next....and I was shocked at some of my responses once the book was finished. I grew too!!
