Dear Ali,

We have ALL been where you are at and occasionally even experienced homeschoolers wonder why they ever undertook this mission.

Start with having goals. Goals that will get you through the bad days. Know WHY you are doing this. If it is a knee jerk reaction to something with your school, that will not get you through. Have goals that include MORE than academics. Perhaps the freedom to take vacations in October instead of when everone else is going, or to be able to give your children the religious upbringing without it being torn away from them inthe classroom every day. There are a million reasons why one might want to homeschool.

After you have it straight in your head why you are doing this (especially for when family members think you are crazy), then you are ready to start. Do your homework. Go to the library and get some books on homeschooling. Linda Dobson has a good book. Before you invest in a lot of curriculum, pick up something like "the 3 R's" (available from Stacey on this site for like $12.00) that can walk you through the reading, writing, and arithmetic basics. Then you can determine what kind of approach you want to have towards homeschooling.

Take your time. Your children are young and you have LOTS of time. Doing your homework will give you the confidence to overcome each issue, one at a time.

Trust yourself. Pray a lot. Ask others for help, but remember that it is YOUR SCHOOL and know that NO ONE knows or loves your children like you do. You can do this! Do not compare your school to others, or your children to others. Each child comes to their place at their time. (Just like not every child is potty trained at 2 years old).

Hope this helps a little. If not, post again or e-mail me and I'll try to help more specifically.

Lynn
