I came across your question while looking for homeschool ideas. You caught my attention because I am also called JoJo by my family. I have a 4 3/4 year old boy with the exact same problem. We deal with it every day also. I went to family practitioner - didn't seem to understand my frustration and recommended mineral oil, senokot, etc. What a disaster that was! He couldn't even make it to the toilet in time now! Prayed about the matter after receiving a referral to a psychologist. I did not want to go this route because it always seemed to me that when we were small our Mothers would have laughed heartily if a doctor suggested a psychologist for such a problem. Solution to date: threw away all "unnatural" medications, started on 4 ounces of prune juice at breakfast everyday (not easy at first and only got him to drink at first by coddling him, holding, cuddling and playing a little game - but he finally started to actually like the taste). Next (sit down) I put diapers back on him. We had a heart to heart and I told him that I didn't mind if he wasn't ready to use the toilet but it would no longer be the rest of the family's problem, i.e. no more poopy loads of laundry, accidents out in public, etc. (Of course, he could no longer go swimming at the public pool because they don't make water baby diapers for kids his size). We then proceeded to go to the pool. He had to sit out on a really hot day and we continued doing this until he got one successful one in the toilet and then he earned one free swim. We made a point of not stressing out over bargains we would make with him however.

Okay, this has been since June 1 that we have been doing this. He wore diapers for about 6 weeks and then I ran out of money for them and gave him a chance to prove himself. He did pretty well. He now willingly goes to the toilet without even telling me! Hooray! He still does have stains in his underwear but have decided that he will just have to deal with that himself. The pressure of being responsible for his poop is completely removed from me because he now goes by himself. Most important ingredient - just love him!
