Subject: 3 things about Hells Bells that do NOT involve discussion of Xander's "mistakes"
In reply to: Phae 's message, "OMG, how sad, just finished watching Hell's Bells ...er ... oops, wrong board." on 19:59:44 07/16/02 Tue

OK, I'm gonna prove that there is plenty to talk about in Hell's Bells that does not involve big hairy discussions on Xander chickening out at the last minute and leaving Anya at the altar.

I think HB gets a bad rap. Maybe that's because a lot of people found it hard to relate to, I don't know. But having gone through the whole wedding thing AND the uncomfortable-at-first melding of two families, I've been through a lot of that and I thought their take on it was hilarious.

3 good things about HB worthy of conversation:

1. A good look at the Harris family. Sure, it wasn't a very flattering portrait of Xander's family, but so what? People who have been bitching about this on the various fan boards need to understand that just because Xander's family was portrayed as a bunch of dysfunctional, negative losers, doesn't mean that that was a commentary on Xander. If anything, I thought it provided some insight—did it not make it easier to understand why Xander sometimes gets insecure once you got a look at hs father? Not everyone is blessed with being born into a healthy, supportive, happy family. I for one, really related to Xander in this ep—and I'm not the only one. But just because a person's family is screwed up doesn't mean you have to be, and I think that came off in HB.

2. The scenes in which Willow and Tara help Anya get dressed for the ceremony; and when Buffy and Xander and Xander and Willow have their pre-ceremony conversations How cute was that? Were those not brilliant scenes? Anya being Anya, Willow and Tara being all flirty, everyone smiling? Cute, cute, cute. If your heart didn't melt a little during those scene, I'd check to see if you still have a pulse.

3. Clem, Clem, Clem. Who can resist the Clem? I sure can't. His presence always lightens things up, and he's such a sweetie! One of my favorite scenes was when Clem was getting pissed at Mr. Harris for publicly dissing his wife. What a sweetie.

CLEM
(agape)
Does this jerk ever shut up?

TENTACLE DEMON
(fuming)
He's making my suckers twitch.

Note that this ep was full of my favorite kind of reversal that joss specializes in: The humans were the ones acting like monsters and the demons were polite and helpful.

Clem was in it!! I missed that. I just always overlook that guy.

I also liked Buffy in this ep. She was actually "normal". And her interaction with Dawn, Xander, and Spike were more uplifting that in past eps.

Yes, I wasn't going to mention the Spike-Buffy interaction in this ep for fear of arousing the ire of the board daddy, but that was another positive thing in HB. I thought Spike and Buffy both came off very positive and classy. The whole "Evil." "Of course." bit was hilarious—and the underlying bittersweet humor between them was cool. It was almost as if they were sharing an inside joke. I thought they both handled themselves well.

Same goes for the scenes between buffy and Dawn and buffy and Xander. You're right—their interactions were much more positive than they'd been in past episodes.

OT but another reason I love Clem: The offer of Bugles and Countrytime lemonade in the season finale. A demon who actually said "Can I offer you ladies something to drink? I was just about to whip up a batch of Countrytime lemonade. LMAO!!!!
