I hear that it's the best way too, as if you know it off by heart you are concentrating more on the sound and you find the notes yourself without thinking. However, I've been playing the guitar for 10 years and I can't learn pieces like that. I think some people just can't do it, because I can remember all sorts of useless things, but not pieces.
