Hello Apprentice!

I think your friend may be exaggerating a little. But it is true, that (1) the more pieces you learn, the easier it gets to 'take in' new ones. You begin to see a piece of music in broader terms, as in sections. When you realize that often, for example, a composer will repeat measures 1 through 4, in measures 5 through 8, perhaps with some variations. When you are beginning, you often are struggling going from note to note, and I guarantee you that you can *not* memorize any significant piece of music that way!
(2) This came up in a separate post also, but it is important to learn pieces by heart, but also by reading. You want to be able to read quicker so you can learn them quicker!
