What your friend said is very correct for more advanced students. What you play gradually by years becomes more and more difficult and in order to overcome the great technical difficulties you really have to constantly look your left finger. If you remember, elementary students look all the time their right hand and therefore make lots of mistakes with their left hand which is the most important. Gradually if you have noticed they master the right hand and focus on the left hand. I have changed 4 teachers and all of them demanded me to learn by heart. Once playing and readying from the partiture and struggling to place my fingers at the correct position, one of them asked me "who do you think you are, Richter?" (who is he anyway :) ). Even if you don't learn all of it by heart, at least learn the most difficults parts. I think that's the best. Besides, have you ever seen great guitarists reading from the music sheet?

Remember that playing the violin is very difficult and additionally violins DO NOT have fixed positions for the left hand (if you are right handed) so you have to place your fingers EXACTLY on the right position by practice. Otherwise with the smallest mistake it will make a difference and it would sound like an untunned.
