John, it's really a matter of personal preference but here are a few pointers.
1. If you have delicate fingers use low tension.
2. If you like a softer more mellow tone use low tension.
3. I prefer high tension for Flamenco because of the harder, brighter tone.
4. Personally I mostly use standard tension because it is middle of the road and suitable for a wide playing range.
Better still, if you can afford it, have 3 or 4 guitars.
