Hi Tan,

The 8va instruction written above the staff indicates that a piece of music should be played one octave higher than written on the staff. For instance, the open, high E string on the guitar, corresponds to the E just above middle C. If 8va was written above the staff, you would play the E at the 12th fret on the high E string.
8va written below the stave means to play one octave lower, and that would be the E on the open D string.
Sometimes 8va bassa.
