I really don't want to debate here. I'm generally a lover, not a fighter. =o) I just wanted to post some words of the living prophet given in General Conference for people to read and consider.

I would like to address this comment which you made:

See, if we are using this statement by Pres. Hinckley as the reason 3/4 of all Mormons support the war, it sounds like an awful lot of people have turned their minds off and are blindly following the words of a leader. Because if Mormons thought about this; didn't think that "the thinking wasn't done for them".....

I think that I perhaps have a vastly different view of what it means when a prophet speaks in General Conference than what is expressed above. My view is based on faith in the kind of remarks below (and hundreds like them.) What is below is from the church's manual Living Prophets for a Living Church. This is probably way more than anyone is interested in on this subject. But this one of the primary foundations for the way I live my life and the basis upon which I make my decisions.

"It is the right and responsibility of the prophets to counsel the Saints. President Wilford Woodruff said, ‘We, as a people, should not treat lightly this counsel, for I will tell you in the name of the Lord and I have watched it from the time I became a member of this Church there is no man who undertakes to run counter to the counsel of the legally authorized leader of this people that ever prospers. You will find that all persons who take a stand against this counsel will never prosper . We have been governed by counsel instead of commandment in many things, which has been a blessing to the saints.’

President J. Reuben Clark, Jr., pinpointed today’s need: ‘What we need today is not more prophets. We have the prophets. But what we need is more people with listening ears. That is the great need of our generation.’
(President Hartman Rector Jr., October 1973 General Conference)

“ There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name's glory’ (D&C 21:6).”
(President Harold B. Lee )

"If you want to know what the Lord has for this people at the present time, I would admonish you to get and read the discourses that have been delivered at this conference, for what these brethren have spoken by the power of the Holy Ghost is the mind of the Lord, the will of the Lord, the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto Salvation." (President Harold B. Lee)

"As the Latter-day Saints go home, it would be well if they consider seriously the importance of taking with them the report of this conference and let it be the guide to their walk and talk during the next six months. These are the important matters the Lord sees fit to reveal to this people in this day." (President Harold B. Lee)

"I hope you will get your copy of the conference report and underrline the pertinent thoughts and keep it with you for continual reference. No text or volume outside the standard works of the Church should have such a prominent place in your personal library shelves." (Spencer W. Kimball)

President Lee also said that we need to "see the power of God resting upon the leaders of this church", and have that conviction "go down into out hearts like fire."

Chuck, that is the way I feel about having a living prophet in our day. And for me, when the prophet speaks, the thinking isn't done. For me, the thinking is JUST BEGINNING.

I think --
--that we really do have prophets who receive revelation for our day.

I think --
--that regardless of how smart or educated or informed I am, that they may feel impressed to say something contrary to my opinions or conclusions.

I think --
--that I WANT to take my cue from their counsel.

I think --
--that I will consider my views and my behaviors and look where I can make changes and revise my positions in order to be in keeping with that counsel and guidance.

Oh yes, there is A LOT of HARD THINKING that goes into determining to look to the living prophets as our guide! And in my view, it takes MUCH LESS thinking to instead doggedly hold to ones own already pre-determined opinions no matter what.

Please don't be upset or offended by these comments. This is just what I think... =o)
